Goverment House

Hongkong, 13th. March, 1903.
With reference to your Despatch No. 427
spory
of the 19th. December, 1901, and to my Despatch No. 489 of Or
the 7th. November last, under cover of which I transmitted to
50452-
you copies of the General Orders issued by this Government, 02
I have the honour to request authority to make certain alter- ations in Rule No. 39, which deals with posts in the Sub-
Department of Interpretation.
2.
It is desirable that the so-called Clerk
and Interpreter in the Public Works Department and the Cor- respondence Clerk, Sanitary Board, should be removed from the
scheme,
as their duties do not to any appreciable extent in-
clude interpretation.
3.
I have also to recommend that the Interpre-
tation posts under the Sanitary Department be increased by
the addition of five Interpreters to the Senior Inspectors of
Nuisances, making a total of seventeen. These Interpreters
were by an omission in the Sanitary Department not included
in the 1903 Estimates. They are being paid during the current
year out of lapsing salaries.
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.,
